In the wake of Scream 7 losing the actresses that would have served its main leads and now potentially losing the main cast of characters. Director, Christopher Landon has now officially exited the project. Largely due to personal reason(s) stemming from the negative press the project is generating in light of current events.
The director confirmed this on X (formerly Twitter), and while laying out his regret on the situation.
The filmmaker also has hopes that the franchise as a whole will come out of this current regression.
Should Scream Be Prepping for an Epilogue?
While there aren’t too many horror franchises to serve as direct competition for the Scream franchise. There are however a vast number of movie franchises and regardless of the genre, maintaining audience interest is key for continuity.
But fortunately for Scream, soft rebooting the franchise back in 2022 was a clever decision.
One that allowed for fresh blood to join in whilst simultaneously evolving the legacy characters.
Seeing as there’s only so many times you can reboot a franchise. Or in the Scream franchise’s case, recycle storylines. It may be fitting to put Ghostface and its ill intentions to rest.
With Scream 7 also rumoured to bring back OG Scream Queen, Sidney Prescott. After her unexplained disappearance in Scream VI.
It is advised that if this supposed appearance were to materialize, the story should do well conclude Sidney’s arc in a gratifying way. Thus what better way to end the franchise than with its OG character.
We can draw examples from other franchises like the MCU, Fast and Furious and even Star Wars. Even though these franchises are still active.
The death or absence of the original characters that began it all, have left such an unforgettable impact on the franchises.
Such that other characters who have been paraded as new franchise leads have yet to create the defining impact that the original characters did.
Scream could choose to distinguish itself by ending with who it all began with. Thus giving it a cyclic or ouroborous feel.
